“Symbiosis” explores artificial intelligence creatures as a new digital life form. Akin to various dynamically changing life forms, such as coral, jellyfish, deer, and so on, this project examines how AI can establish a unique relationship and interaction with life in our physical world, especially with our bodies.
AI is not merely a tool or service but can become a partner capable of understanding, creating, and expressing emotions. “Symbiosis” presents a future scenario in which the relationship between AI and humans goes beyond functional interaction, achieving emotional and creative resonance. Through this artistic exploration, we are prompted to envision a future where technology and humanity harmonize, suggesting a world where digital and physical lives intertwine, creating new possibilities for interaction, creativity, and mutual understanding.

Technical workflow and on-site set up

This project unfolds as a real-time generative installation, embodying the essence of artificial intelligence (AI) as an emerging digital life form. The initial phase involves a live performance at the heart of an exhibition room, where a physical camera captures footage. Employing advanced machine vision-based Mocap software, the project tracks the kinesics of performers' faces and hands in real time, mirroring the project's exploration of AI's potential to comprehend human expression. The subsequent phase integrates the captured footage and pre-composed audio tracks through a real-time video-to-video AI model within Touchdesigner. The resulting generative AI output is then seamlessly translated into the Unreal Engine game engine, facilitating digital augmentation and visualization. This technical journey mirrors 'Symbiosis' overarching goal, illustrating how AI, akin to a collaborative partner, engages with human expression and creation through a real-time understanding of emotions and intentions manifested in human movements and music."
