Water Beings
Director & Media Artist: Ruipeng Wang
Can growth, decay, and regeneration find balance under environmental limits?
Water Beings stages a population of autonomous digital cells that enacts a self-perpetuating cycle: seven chromatic generations, each spawned on contact by the last, from first-generation green through to seventh-generation pink, whose collisions regenerate the green and renew the loop.
As the colony approaches its environmental carrying capacity, cells exhaust virtual resources and space, dying off; their remnants sediment into the environment, altering its topology and inhibiting further growth until the population subsides and a new cycle begins. In staging the fragile intersection between the emergence of complex social life and systemic collapse, the work dissolves the boundary between digital ghost and physical body.
